AKRON, Ohio (Oct. 4, 2006) -- The technical team for ExxonMobil Chemical’s Santoprene(tm) specialty products has produced a new document which describes the PolyMag(tm) Process - a magnetic separation process that can assist with scrap recovery and parts recycling when Santoprene thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) is co-molded with other materials.

An important benefit of Santoprene TPV is that it’s fully recyclable. Tests have proved that general grades of Santoprene TPV exhibit minimal changes in physical properties even after eleven passes through a typical blow molding machine.

By utilizing the PolyMag separation process from Eriez Magnetics, Santoprene TPVs can be separated from other materials when co-processed using two-shot or insert injection molding, dual material extrusion, sequential 3D blow molding or the exchange blow molding processes. By incorporating a unique ferrous additive into one of the materials, the PolyMag™ process allows the separation of one material from another.

Topics covered in the document include: a description and benefits of the process; where to incorporate the additive; the impact of the additive on Santoprene™ TPVs; and, processing Santoprene™ TPVs using the PolyMag™ additive.

"Santoprene™ TPVs are increasingly used in co-molding and overmolding applications. To fully capitalize on the recycling benefits of Santoprene products they need to be separated before they can be recycled. An explanation of how this can be achieved using the PolyMag process is essential, so that recycling and scrap recovery can be maximized," said Dan Collins, senior Marketing Technical Services specialist, ExxonMobil Chemical Specialty Elastomers Business.
