Mold Texture and Steel Selection

A customer called in asking what kind of mold finish was needed to ensure proper part ejection. Normally, with an SPI/SPE-B #3, #4, #5 or #6 finish (VDI 30-36 / Ra 3-6), you can expect good mold release from a Santoprene™ brand TPV. However, for softer grades or if a high polish finish is needed, air assisted ejection would be required for easy part removal and minimal distortion. Recommendations for surface finish and steel selection can be found on page 41 of the Guide for Injection Molding for Thermoplastic Rubbers (http://www.santoprene.com/cms/technical_brochures/68b77a7d57b429df/img.pdf).
