Jetting & Filling Issues
A customer was using 101-87 Santoprene™ TPV to replace EPDM rubber and was having molding issues with jetting of the part and the part not filling correctly. The customer sent in pictures of the issues. The part was overmolding on a cylindrical steel insert inside another cylindrical steel part. The part was shaped like a tube. The problem was evident after seeing the pictures. The part was too thick (up to 3/4" in some sections), and the gate was positioned so to shoot material all the way across a thick section of the part, thus causing the jetting issue. I recommended they redesign the part using coring and ribbing to reduce the wall thickness, and change the gate location to shoot the Santoprene through the outer steel wall, thus causing the material to impinge on the inner steel insert giving better flow and therefore better appearance to the part.
